  1. How does Barthes describe the photographs? What is the content of the exhibition, The Family of Man? What is the function of the figure of God in this exhibit? Why do the pictures, and the discourse that authorizes them, suppress history, according to Barthes?
  2. Read: “Ought we not rather to give up thinking of man…” (28). What does Foucault mean here?
  3. Fanon says that we must leave Europe behind (‘Leave this Europe where they are never done talking of Man, yet murder men everywhere they find them’ 23). What does he mean by this?
  4. Read Hardt and Negri: “If we are to conceive Man as separate from nature, then Man does not exist. This recognition is precisely the death of Man” (91). What do they mean here?
