This environment is so new and so unique that a radically different kind of sociopolitical organization (social corporation) is required for individuals to operate successfully within it. The absence of physicality in cyberspace significantly alters communication to such a degree that complete control of the situation is not possible. Large business corporations have difficulty assuming a foothold in the new environment as the numerous “Dot Com” failures clearly illustrate. On the other hand, it has been my observation that there are certain things that cyberspace does remarkably well; it is a perfect venue for small, activist communities. I believe that America Online, for example, succeeds to such a phenomenal degree because it is highly community-oriented. Members inside the overall construct are primarly concerned with the individual community structures they belong to within the service, whether it’s a message board centered around a shared hobby or a themed chat room.
