T ranscriptions was seeded with a $30,000 Teaching with Technology grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities and an accompanying $15,000 federal matching grant. This government funding was the catalyst for further, substantial funding from the project's home institution, the Univ. of California, Santa Barbara, as well as from private donors. (See Funding Proposals)

The NEH grant was a three-year commitment (later extended one year) for 1998-2002. While Transcriptions will Transcriptionscontinue with support from the UCSB English Dept., it is currently searching for new funding to develop its undergraduate Literature & Culture of Information (LCI) specialization more fully and to start a formal graduate program. Graduate Student Curricular Program

One-time funding to start a graduate emphasis to match the undergraduate Literature & Culture of Information specialization:

  • Stipends for temporary (one quarter) release of three faculty from teaching duties to develop program: $100,000
  • Publicity for graduate emphasis and recruitment of prospective students: $8,000.

Computing Studio for Undergraduates

One-time funding for development of computing facility in UCSB English Department designed for use by undergraduate students in Transcriptions courses (to supplement the present Transcriptions Studio, a research-and-development facility able to hold only a few undergraduates at a time):

  • Facility development (equipment, software, room furnishings): $40,000

Student Internship Program

One-time funding to create program to place students internships with local information-technology and media firms:

  • Stipend for temporary (one-quarter) release of two faculty members from teaching duties to develop the business contacts and UCSB institutional framework for the program: $66,000
  • Initial publicity for program and recruitment of business partners and interning students: $5,000

Student Research and Teaching Assistants

Annual support for development of undergraduate Literature & Culture of Information curricular specialization:

  • Graduate Student Research Assistants: $20,000
  • Undergraduate Student Research Assistants: $17,000
  • Graduate Student Teaching Assistants: $50,000
    Total Annual Needs: $87,000

Needs best met with the establishment of an endowment:

  • Graduate Student Research Assistants: $400,000
  • Undergraduate Student Research Assistants: $340,000
  • Graduate Student Teaching Assistants: $1,000,000

Technology Development

Annual support for technical development:

Transcriptions Colloquia

Annual support for honoraria and other expenses needed to bring experts in both academic and extra-academic fields related to information culture to campus for colloquia and class visits:
